About J W Myers Monumental Masons

Based in the village of Wheldrake, just a stone’s throw from the centre of York, you will find one of the most respected and fastest growing family businesses in the area – J W Myers Monumental Masons.

For over 300 years the Myers family have been supporting the bereaved in and around York. It’s a heritage owner James Myers is extremely proud of – and rightly so for this really is a family business in the truest sense of the word.

What started in 1701 with Mark Myers, a skilled carpenter and coffin maker before progressing to being the first Funeral Director in the Myers family, has grown in to one of the UK’s leading family owned and run Monumental Masons. Whilst initially training to become a Funeral Director James, having worked under the tutelage of local stonemason Joe Smith, found his real passion lies in creating memorials and it is in this direction he has chosen to develop the business.

The relationships built by James and his family within the local Funeral Directing community over the years however means that he remains the “go to” monumental mason of choice for many Funeral Directors and cemeteries within York and the surrounding area.

With his wife Nicola by his side James has built the business from a single branch in York to now having branches in Easingwold, associated branches in Goole and Scarborough, and new branches opening soon in Selby and Malton.

A team of caring professionals stands behind James, ensuring that all his clients receive the highest level of care and attentive service possible at one of the most difficult times of their lives. For all the staff of J W Myers however serving the community goes beyond the supply of a memorial. During the recent pandemic they sourced and distributed, free of charge, toilet rolls to their local community and PPE to many Funeral Directors and Care Homes in the area.

James serves as a Councillor for the village of Wheldrake, and he and his staff ensure no child in the village is without presents at Christmas when they take on the role of Father Christmas and his elves, along with the help of the oldest vehicle in the Company – a red vintage mini pick-up. It is this ethos of caring for the community that ensures J W Myers is one of the fastest growing and most recommended Monumental Masons in the area.
